The Calm
There is nothing that calms my soul more than sitting down to create new drawing or painting. It’s something that allows my body, brain, and entire nervous system to relax. If I’m stressed or feeling overwhelmed, taking time to dive into my art is a great place for me to start to relax.
Funny, because that place used to be at the bar with my BFF, Miller Lite. Then it was good ol’ Tito. Nothing relaxed me more than having a few drinks. It’s a slippery slope using alcohol and other substances to try to make you feel more comfortable in your own skin. Turns out, those things only make the stress and anxiety worse the next day.
I’ve been an artist and creator for years, but only in 2025 did I realize that I needed to start taking myself and my work seriously. By seriously, I mean, study what I love and create what calls to me. See the beauty and the wonder in the art. It’s not just a painted picture. It’s part of you. It’s full of your energy and even more so, the energy that needs to be shared with the world. Art has always been a point of stirring. It can inspire and invoke feelings you didn’t know you had. My art has constantly been able to remind me of the things that made me happy as a child. Family trips, favorite candy, video games, bicycle rides, nature. Things that made me happy and excited as a child.
Funny, when I wrote “nature” my mind quickly wandered to a place I have often thought about as an adult. My kindergarten teacher lived on some land by a lake and our class took a field trip there. I can’t remember much. Trails and leaves and forest all around. I wish I knew where this was. I’ve always thought I knew, but I’ve never been back. It certainly had an impact on me.
Words Matter
I have come to realize that lots more people than I can imagine believe in my art. More people watching as I create and begin to share more and more with the world. It’s hard for an artist to put themselves out there. You see, when we paint, we put ourselves into our work. You may not understand it. You may not even like it. What I will remind you of now is to keep those thoughts to yourself. When you comment on someone’s work, you care commenting on their very essence. Negativity shows jealousy. Our creativity, whether we work at it or not, is a gift from our higher source. A gift that is to be shared. Good, bad, ugly.
You’ve heard the saying, beauty is in the eye of the beholder? This is true and just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean you need to share your opinion.
The opposite of this is true as well. It is very easy (and free) to support your friends work by liking and sharing it on social media. It gets their work in front of others who may want to support their work or even own their work. So next time someone you know shares their work….do them a solid (did I age myself here?) and SHARE THAT POST!
Creating, whether you’re painting, drawing, knitting, cooking, or baking (yes, these are all form of creating), is good for your soul. It’s good for our mind and body. It’s a form of meditation that allows our brain to focus so our soul can get some much needed rest. Don’t be afraid to be BAD at something. Just do it!
What is your creative hobby of choice?
I love to paint. I am a self taught watercolor artist who is now painting in Oils. I have also studied pastels and most recently, oil pastels. I’m also keen on digital art. I play in my Procreate app on my iPad in the evenings. Following Lisa Bardot’s monthly list of prompts. I joined Lisa’s online Art Makers Club last year to learn, step-by-step, how to create on my ipad. I love stickers and wanted to be able to create them quickly. I also wanted to learn how to use my iPad to create digital artwork. Most recently, I created the logo for DeLille Home’s Love Where You Live podcast.
So, so me, just making time to create every day is essential in my well-being. It is good for my soul and I encourage you to give it a try. Even if you just doodle on a scrap piece of paper you find in your junk drawer.
I am now offering my expertise, my experience, my guidance to help others with their own awakening and creativity. Currently one-on-one, but as my guides would have it, they think I should also offer this in a group setting. So, stay tuned for that and let me know if this is something you’d like as well. So…instead of leaving this at the bottom of my posts as I normally do, I give you ALL the ways to work with me today.
