The difference between success and failure is usually a single decision away.
There’s a moment in every creative journey when the spark flickers. When the canvas feels too quiet, the ideas feel too small, or life feels too heavy to make space for art. We all hit those seasons. They’re not signs to quit — they’re invitations to shift.
I’ve learned this over and over again in my own life. Every time I thought I’d reached the end of something, it turned out I was standing at the threshold of a new beginning. Creativity isn’t a straight line. It’s a spiral. We return to ourselves again and again, each time with a little more wisdom, a little more courage, a little more color.
Why We Want to Give Up…
We don’t give up because we’re weak. We give up because:
- We’re tired.
- We’re overwhelmed.
- We think our to-do is more important.
- We’re comparing ourselves to someone else’s chapter.
- We’ve been told time for ourself comes after caring for everyone else.
- We’re carrying responsibilities that feel bigger than our dreams.
- We’re carrying responsibilities that AREN’T OURS!
- We’re afraid the world won’t care about what we create….and who cares??
Life keeps us busy and priorities shift. Nine times out of ten, our shift in priorities puts our “hobbies” on the back burner. Then, we give up something that’s brought countless amounts of happiness, calm, and grounding. Without hesitation, we’ve given up something we actually need because we’ve classified it as a hobby or a luxury. But here’s the truth: art and creative hobbies don’t need permission to matter. It matters because you matter. It matters because it is a part of who we are.
The Real Magic Happens When You Stay With It
Every time you choose to keep going — even in tiny ways — something shifts.
You build trust with yourself and strengthen your creative muscles. Then, you open the door for inspiration to find you again.
Sometimes “not giving up” looks like:
- Showing up for 10 minutes instead of an hour
- Making one mark, one stroke, one note
- Letting yourself be a beginner again
- Resting so you can return with clarity
- Allowing your art to evolve with you
Persistence isn’t loud. It’s steady, but most of all….It’s SELF CARE!!
Your Story Isn’t Finished
If you’re reading this and you’re in that in‑between place — the place where you’re wondering if it’s worth it — let me say this clearly:
You are not done. Your creativity is not done. Your story is still unfolding in ways you can’t see yet. Sometimes inspiration comes from a change in medium. If you’ve always been an acrylic painter, learn pastels or watercolor. Try digital drawing. Take a stained glass class. This trigger NEW neurons in your brain to develop because you are doing something different. New ways of thinking encourage new creative links. I painted watercolor for a long time and always wanted to try oils. I finally met someone who just said…I’ll pick you up for class. I’ve got all you need, just be ready at 6:30. And thus, I started a new medium.
Today, to become a working artist, people will tell you to find a style and stick with it. I say, “fuck that,” because I’m not one thing. I am many things and I bet you are, too. Every season you’ve lived, every challenge you’ve navigated, every moment you thought you were breaking — those are the very things that make your art powerful. They’re the colors you paint with in the moment. The style you choose to express yourself at the time. Don’t believe me, go take a look at Pablo Picasso’s work and see how it evolved. Heck, any of the masters will reveal how their work changed throughout their lives.
A Gentle Invitation to YOU
Today, choose one small thing that keeps you connected to your creative self.
One brushstroke. One sketch. One doodle. One idea scribbled on a sticky note….and Lord knows, I have a stack of sticky note ideas on my desk at all times.
One moment of remembering why you started creating in the first place. That twinkle and shimmer of creativity. The smell of Crayola Crayons. The love of bright colors. The feeling of wet clay in your hands. The paint on your shirt. The yarn between your fingers. You don’t have to leap. You just have to stay in the story and keep adding to it.
Your art is waiting for you — and the world is, too. So what are you waiting for?
I am now offering my expertise, my experience, my guidance to help others with their own awakening and creativity.
