Welcome to Fun Fact Friday! In my bio, I describe myself as self-taught. And for the most part, I am. I never took an art class in my life until I was in Summer School at UNCG one year back in the 90’s. It was a simple drawing class, but I remember it well. I still have a few still-life drawing of the turned over counter stools from that class.
Since then, I have taken a couple of pastel classes from Bill Gramley, but I very rarely pull out my pastels to work at home. I’m not sure why, but I tend to create better work when I’m in class than at home. Maybe the kind guidance. Maybe when I’m in a class, I don’t feel the pressures of the housework calling me to get back to life.
All of my watercolor and acrylic work is self-taught. I also practice, practice, practice. It’s what keeps the creative juices flowing, as well as the continued improvement. You can follow my daily doodles on Instagram (@lauriemendenhallart). All of those doodles are for sale, so if you see something you like, let me hear from you.
