Sail On

I visited Topsail Island, NC, for the first time last year.  I took a long weekend trip with a close friend.  We visited our friend, Ginger.  If you’re familiar with the Surf City area and the Trailer Bar, you know Ginger.  I had grown up going to the Brunswick County Beaches and most commonly, Holden Beach.  These are southwest of Surf City, around the corner of Bald Head Island.

This past weekend, a very destructive Hurricane Florence blew her fury all over Topsail Island and others along the North Carolina Coast.  I thought about the fun we had on that trip and how we really wanted to plan another girls weekend down there.  I thought about the Labor Day party we attended on the Intercoastal.  I wondered how that home fared the storm.  Surely, flooding from the waterway.  The ground floor of the home was furnished, but sparingly.  Anyone living at the beach knows your ground floor is ground zero during any hurricane or tropical storm.  Over the weekend I began a piece that was a reminder of that trip and that party.  It’s not complete, but it’s coming along.    I’m glad I decided to create it so large, too. It brings more of my memories to life.
