One of the best things I ever did was begin the path to self discovery. This is different for each of us. No two paths are quite the same. You see, free will often gets in the way. I know I was pretty adamant about NOT quitting drinking. I could quit, but I didn’t want to because in my mind, I was having WAY more fun getting hammered with my friends. And it was fun, until it wasn’t. Luckily, I found myself reconnecting with those friends I’d made in the Friends of Bill club. I found them showing up more and more in my life path. Even my old sponsor called me up one day to see if I wanted to start working out together (and we did). Truly, in hindsight, this was her committing to closing up those loose ends in all her contracts before she left this earth. I am grateful for that commitment and for her infectious laugh that I can still hear in my head.
Being intuitive, I know that there’s no accident there. And honestly, I’ll be the first to tell you I need a brick to the head sometimes. I was grateful for the reminders and even more grateful that I had come so far as to notice and follow those breadcrumbs. For a while, I would have a glass of prosecco every now and then but truly, it wasn’t something I wanted anymore. It also wasn’t going to serve me on the path I knew laid ahead. I had felt at 40 that I really didn’t want to drink anymore, but as life kept life-ing, I found myself out there drinking regularly. It’s definitely something that will help you stuff down those emotions you’re not interested in healing.
As life became more solitary, I did more yoga. I even studied with the amazing Jenn at High Point Yoga School for my 200 RYT training. I found myself less and less interested in the drink. I was also in some incredible shape. I had worked hard (and very sober) to learn Usui Reiki and knew that this path of energetic healing could only be possible sober. You see, energy work and all other modalities, including intuition, requires the cleanest possible channel.

When you choose to use your intuitive and psychic gifts, you are engaging in a sacred practice—one that requires clarity, discernment, and a deep connection to higher frequencies. Alcohol, however, lowers vibration, clouds perception, and creates energetic openings that can make it harder to trust the purity of what you’re receiving. Instead of enhancing intuition, it distorts it, making it difficult to differentiate between true guidance and subconscious projections.
Your gifts thrive when your mind is clear and your energy field is strong. Sobriety allows you to remain anchored in your own wisdom, ensuring that you are channeling messages from the highest realms rather than inviting interference from lower vibrational influences. When you honor your body and spirit in this way, your intuitive faculties sharpen, your ability to connect deepens, and you move through the world with greater integrity in your spiritual work.
Short story long: Alcohol and energy work don’t mix.
Here are a few ways alcohol can interfere with intuition and psychic abilities:
- Distorted Perception – Alcohol disrupts the clarity needed for intuitive insights. Instead of receiving pure, high-frequency messages, perceptions become muddled, making it difficult to discern whether the information is truly intuitive or influenced by subconscious fears and desires.
- Weakened Energy Field – When you drink, your auric field and energetic boundaries become porous, making it easier for lower vibrations or external influences to seep in. This can lead to feeling energetically drained or attracting confusing, ungrounded messages that don’t resonate with your highest truth.
- Reduced Discernment – One of intuition’s strongest gifts is discernment—the ability to tell what is truly aligned versus what is deceptive or misleading. Alcohol weakens this ability, making it harder to filter out intrusive energies or distinguish authentic guidance from ego-driven impulses.
- Disconnect from Higher Consciousness – Intuition functions best when you are in a state of clarity and alignment. Alcohol creates separation between your higher consciousness and your grounded awareness, making it more challenging to connect with guides, angels, and higher realms.
- Impaired Dream Recall – Many intuitives receive guidance through dreams. Alcohol disrupts sleep cycles and memory retention, making it harder to recall or interpret dream messages accurately.
- Emotional Amplification – Alcohol can heighten emotions like fear, anxiety, or insecurity, causing intuitive impressions to be colored by temporary emotional states instead of coming from a place of deep inner knowing.

Sobriety strengthens intuition by keeping your channel pure, your energy strong, and your discernment sharp. Getting sober seems so scary. Truthfully, it is. It’s why going to AA meetings and finding a sponsor that has YEARS of sobriety, especially when you fear failure, is so very important. It’s even more important to find someone who you don’t have a personal relationship with outside the walls of AA. You will absolutely develop that relationship, but the 12 steps may seem overwhelming with someone you already know.
What I do know is that if you are not a clean and pure channel, anything you get or give to others is not of the highest and purest intent. It is a disservice to yourself and others. Offering out your nudges to people when you’re living with alcohol is not kind or helping. Alcohol opens the door to low vibrations that can wreak havoc on your life. Don’t believe me? Take a walk down memory lane. It’s not only the things that happen when we’re drunk, but also, when we’re sober. It’s chaos and can feel like your world is falling apart. And, boy, do I have an encyclopedia of stories and adventures in my own life to prove it. Looking back, I chose alcohol over my gifts for a LONG time. I am aware of it because I now know I would have rather treated my fears and shame with alcohol (and more) than to have faced them and healed.
Today, I am actively healing. What do I mean by this? I mean, every day is a choice. I choose to meditate and journal and show up for myself. I choose not to hit the bar scene…even if that scene is in the privacy of my own home. To that point, it’s not. My husband has never been a drinker and for that, I am grateful.
