When we were kids, my mom and her brothers would plan fabulous, two-week vacations to Holden Beach. We always stayed in the same house, Captain’s Quarters, on the west end of the island. It wasn’t very developed back in the 80’s and there were plenty of sand dunes and beach to explore. Life was simple back then. I miss that simplicity and the fun we had as kids.

This past weekend, my cousin, Kate, organized a family reunion with my mom’s side of the family. Organizing 40+ people to all show up at the same time is no easy task. Especially when we all run on our own time (some of us early, some of us late, and some of us Goldilocks). Over the four hour period, everyone arrived, ate, swam, and left. Most importantly, we got to visit with each other.

We talked about things going on now in our lives….like my cousins’ youngest daughters are heading to HPU in the fall for their freshman year. Others are working in the real world or starting pharmacy school this week. My uncles are all doing well, as are my own parents–and I’m grateful.

I realized I am the crazy aunt chasing my nieces and nephews around to make them talk to me. They haven’t realized my coolness yet. I got great photos of my nephew perfecting his back dive and my brother-in-law throwing the kids in to the deep end. I bet he’s still sore today.

As we packed up and cleaned up, we all agreed we need to do it more often. It’s going to take someone taking charge of it, but I bet it can be pulled off. Some way….some how. And I’m excited for the next one!
